A Short Test

This week my first-semester German and first-semester French students are having their first test of the semester in my classes. In light of that, I thought I'd post a little test for my blog readers. Just five questions — it'll be a breeze for you. After all, it's in English!

Okay, let's find out how attentive you are when taking tests….

First Question:
You are participating in a race.
You overtake the second person.
What position are you now in?

Answer:
If you answered that you are first, then you are…
absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person, you take his place, so you are now in second!

(Try not to mess up with next question, okay?)

Second Question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are….

Answer:
If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again! Tell me, how can anyone overtake the last person?

Third Question:
What kind of test would it be without a mental-math question?

(Note: This must be done in your head only. Do not use paper and pencil or a calculator.)

Here goes…
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.
Add another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10.
What is the total?

Answer:
Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100.

If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator!

(If you said, 5000, don't feel too bad. The sequence confuses our brain, which seems to want to jump to the next column — the 1000's instead of the 100's.)

(Maybe today is just not your day…?)

Fourth Question:
Mary's father has five daughters:
1. Nana
2. Nene
3. Nini
4. Nono
What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Answer:
Did you answer Nunu?
No! Of course it isn't!
Her name is Mary ... reread the question!

Fifth Question:
There is a mute who wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the transaction is completed.

Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?

Think about it first before scrolling down for the answer….

Answer:
He just has to open his mouth and say, "I would like to buy a pair of sunglasses." He's blind, not mute.

How many did you get right? My proofreader and I each got 3 right. I hope you got a chuckle out of this, even if you didn't score 5.

For the second question, could the runner be in first place? If the race takes place on a circuit and the runners go around it more than once, then theoretically it is possible for the first-place runner (or any of the others for that matter) to pass the last-place runner.

Why does a blind man need sunglasses?

5 for 5. Would that everything today had gone so swimmingly. :) On question 2, the idea of lapping the last runner is most certainly an option (and happens more often that one might think). I would certainly put in a vote for an alternate correct answer to that end.

    3 out of 5.
That was fun at the end of a long day. Thanks. :)
