Can We Believe What We See?

How do you know whether to believe what you see? With today's technology it's possible to alter images so that the changes are almost imperceptible. In addition to that, some people have great fun posing to create certain illusions. And sometimes people and objects are aligned quite accidentally to produce amusing effects. I wish I could find and scan in a hilarious picture taken in our living room where one the people standing in front of our fireplace ended up with what looked like antlers when the pictures were developed.

Here are some pictures that have been accumulating in my files. Some are undoubtedly contrived, but I think that some are purely serendipitous.

In this final week before the elections, be careful. Reality is often distorted, and not everything may be as it appears. It's truly hard to know what and whom to believe. I'm glad to know One who is always to be trusted and believed!

If you have a funny picture similar to those above, please send it my way. I'll do another post in the future with the best ones I receive.

Those were hilarious! I don’t know exactly how to express my thoughts, except for “Hahahahaha!”

Very funny pictures! I hadn’t seen most of those.

Have you seen those powerade (maybe gatorade) commercials that feature athletes? One showed LeBron James making multiple, consecutive full-court jumpshots on a basketball court. It looked completely believable but it was just clever video editing and direction. Another video shows a quarterback throwing a pass and knocking his receiver back a good five yards. Clever, yes, but scarily believable.

Great photos! Thanks so much for taking the time to post them! I realize that some of them were probably fixed but who cares? They are still priceless!

These were great!! I think I’ll be laughing well into next week. It was nice having something to laugh about after some of your more serious blog posts. Thanks again.

@Wally and Jewel – I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures. I find several of them hilarious.

@Dave – I haven’t seen the commercials you talked about. They sound good.

@Anna – the blog is about my “humorous and serious perspectives on life.” I just looked back at the past few posts, and though there were some serious points made, every one of them had a fairly substantial amount of humor too. I guess my mind is on serious matters lately with the country I love at the crossroads of potentially huge change, not necessarily for the best. Glad you enjoyed the pictures. 🙂

Wow, these are hilarious pictures. I wish I could get some of them in higher quality as desktop pictures…

@David – I’m sorry that the resolution is low. You might be able to find some of the pictures on the internet in larger sizes by doing a search for “coincidental photos”

The Leaning Tower of Pisa illusion is classic. I wish I had gotten a picture of Dr. Edward Panosian (history professor at Bob Jones University) acting as if he were pushing over the tower when we there back in 2002.

I have one to describe. At our wedding reception, there’s a picture of someone playing the piano while one of my wife’s cousins is sticking her fork into something on her plate. However, the plate is hidden from view behind the head of the pianist, so it appears that the fork is being stabbed into the pianist’s head.

@Michael – You’re right, I’m sure. That picture is soooo obviously posed. One of my former French team members sent a picture of me that I will put out on a future blog post on this topic – a picture in which I was obviously similarly posing.

That picture from your wedding reception sounds like a good one for my blog! Thanks for commenting!
