Do You Like Memes?

Being on Facebook is a love—hate relationship for many of us. I love many of the things I can see and learn on Facebook, but there's no way in the world that I can keep up with all the news from all my Facebook "friends." And honestly, I hate some of the things I see on Facebook — things that range from disappointing to hurtful.

One thing that I absolutely do love, though, is some of the memes that people post. For those not familiar with what a "meme" (rhymes with dream) is, here's the definition from Wikipedia: "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture." A "meme" can be an image or a video or even a clever hashtag, but one of the most common is a picture with a caption written across it. Sometimes the picture helps illustrate the caption. Other times the caption makes an ordinary picture funny or a funny picture even funnier.

I thought a fun blog post would be one with some of my favorite memes I've seen.

A lot of memes have been done using a picture of Willy Wonka. The look on his face makes whatever snarky caption is displayed all the snarkier. I especially like this one, in light of today's post:

Willy Wonka Meme

Meme makers often use easily recognizable pictures from movies, like the following one.

Chick Flick

Another type of meme uses pictures of famous people or easily recognizable faces.

Fun Queen

This next meme reminded me of our recent trip to and from Michigan.

Road Destruction

Here's one I saw recently and put out on Facebook.

Titanic 2015

I commented that it would be more likely that the people in the water would be taking selfies with the sinking ship in the background.

Some memes are good vehicles for delivering puns. (Imagine my liking something like that!)

Blame Shelf

Here's a meme done in a very different style, but humorous nonetheless.

Family Insanity

Pictures of kids make great memes.

Airplane Spoons

Here are loads of memes using the next kid's picture. They're mostly about succeeding at one thing or another The boy's face and fist pump are perfect for rejoicing over a success.

Kid Fist Pump Meme

Pictures of animals are also very popular.

Exciting Dull Home

The use of a picture of a sloth is subtle, isn't it?

I like the next one. It makes me think of people who either have photographic memories or who spend too much time online.

Repost Spotted

Some animal pics help deliver puns.

Not Ribbiting Movie

Some help deliver some not only puns, but also some things totally geeky.

Geek See Through Fish

Pictures of dogs are good for memes.

Day 3 Still Lost

There really was a dog in that picture!

Cat Poops in House

Speaking of which, pictures of cats are particular favorites of people who makes memes. Cats in repose...

Committed to Coffee

Cats in action...

Invisible Bike

And cats in character...

No Hamster

Here's one I love because of the German.

Fussbodenschleifmaschinenverleih

That German word is a shop where you can rent floor sanding machines.

Here's another fun one for people who love language and grammar, with a little punning thrown into the mix.

Ran Past Tents

If you want to make some memes of your own, here are some sites where you can do it for free. (DISCLAIMER: There may be images that aren't to your liking.)

As a final thought, I have to say that I am disappointed at the spelling and grammar in many memes, and in Facebook statuses actually. This meme addresses that.

FB Statuses Dictionary

So if you try your hand at meme making and don't want Santa to bring you a dictionary for Christmas, be careful with your spelling. Who knows, your meme could go viral, errors and all!

I am trying to make the most of my final week of summer break. This coming Monday we teachers at BJU will be returning to our offices and to In-Service. I'm looking forward to the new school year, for sure, but this has been a very nice summer vacation too. Sigh! 🙂
