great cat quotations

Posted on 24 Jul 2008

My wife was looking at the tag cloud in the sidebar of my blog and said she noticed I don’t have many posts about cats. Since we’re cat people, I thought I’d better do something about that!

Here’s a list of great quotations about cats and a few pictures I hope you’ll find amusing.

As much as my wife and I are fans of Lilian Jackson Braun’s series of The Cat Who… books, I have to say that we’ve seen our cats in some awfully unphotogenic poses. The following picture is a couple of cats who are modest sunbathers.

Our grandson Drew loves to play in water, and so his grandma Esther bought him a swimming pool. Here are several pictures of him enjoying it.

We’d enjoy hearing comments from other cat people!

I don’t like cats. Sorry. I much prefer dogs. But, to be fair, I’m not much of a pet person anyway. We all have things we like to spend money on. I prefer spending my money on other things. Additionally, even if I liked cats, I could never own one since I’m quite allergic to them. My wife is as well. Anyway, I appreciated the fact that the quotes were balanced between those that painted cats favorably and those that painted cats unfavorably.

Thanks for your comment, Michael. Even though I’m a cat person, I’m not oblivious to the downsides of their quirky personalities and the work they involve. I do enjoy their company, though. My mom hates cats, and so as a kid I could never have one. My wife grew up with cats. It took me a while to get used to how different they are from dogs, but once I did, I much prefer cats to dogs. Our kids grew up without a dog, and now all three of them are dog people. Go figure! :-)

Chief and I don’t have cats of our own, but we take care of a neighbor’s cat when he’s out of town. Said cat has us both suitably under his control and we love him for it :)

Here are some comparing cats and dogs:

Dog: They feed me, love me and take care of me: they must be gods!
Cat: They feed me, love me and take care of me: I must be a god! - Unknown

If animals could speak the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow, but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much. - Mark Twain

Looks like Drew got a bathing suit to match his swimming pool!

We’ve had cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, frogs, fish, lizards, snakes, and children. Cats are the easiest to care for by far!

Jami, that’s hilarious! Your sister-in-law’s earlier comment was pro-cat. You two will have to work this out between you. :-)

The modest cats are hilarious. My family had a cat and a dog, and I like both.

We grew up not being able to have pets.
Somehow, the quiet mystery of a cat is intrigues me…so we have had several cats.
You forgot the quote: Dogs have masters; Cats have staff.
I have read that Hitler hated cats and loved dogs…..hmmmmmmmmmm.

I like cats; they taste like chicken. :-)

I could go on, but I shall refrain. Apparently your old nature still clings to you, Rob. You like cats…..

    Rob,

If you own a cat and all your kids have dogs, then perhaps it’s true what they say:

“The grass is always greener . . . when you have dogs.” :)

Just to finish your Cat Who quote: Cats never strike a pose that isn’t photogenic… except when they are being photographed!
The perversity of man is second only to that of cats.

How’s this - I love cats so much that I keep two even though I’m allergic to them. I can’t find who it was that said, “God gave us the cat so that we may pet the tiger,” but it’s certainly true. Dogs can’t claim anything so noble as the lion or the cheetah as a relation. I wonder if you’ve seen the “Simon’s Cat” short cartoons http://www.youtube.com/user/simonscat
They’re definitely made by a cat owner!

Hi Rob…sorry…no cat people live in our house. We recently saw a stray cat in our country neighborhood that was unfortunately probably dropped off, and it kept hanging around. I could not get that cat to “scat!” and was ready to catch it in a live trap and drop it off someplace until our neighbors adopted it, unfortunately. I’m hoping they make it an inside cat so it stays on their side of the fence. I’m keeping my trap handy (altho I grew up knowing a cat’s real home is a burlap sack). Sorry, Rob. :)
