Kulula – the Seriously Humorous Airline

With students flying all over the place for college in the next couple of weeks, I thought I would post the contents of an e-mail I received recently from a long-time reader. Kulula, a low-cost airline based in South Africa, is a subsidiary of British Airways franchise Comair. Kulula is known not only for its great fares, but also for its sense of humor. It seems that most everyone has taken their humor good naturedly, except maybe a kerfuffle with FIFA about some of Kulula's advertising humor.

Here are ten pictures of the livery of some of their planes. I'll make almost no comments, leaving that up to you.

The message on this plane is simple enough.

See if you can find the camouflaged plane in this final picture.

What a pity Kulula doesn't fly internationally. I'd love to support them just for not taking themselves too seriously! Maybe this blog post will do just that. Are you familiar with this airline?

This week is our annual in-service at the university, and classes begin two weeks from today!

That is soo funny! International flying is a grim affair – we need some more like this!

That airline might make me enjoy flying a little bit more. I really don’t want to fly any time soon since I flew up and back to Cleveland this past Saturday to attend a friend’s wedding. Four commuter jets in one day was four too many.

I would like to give kudos to Southwest Airlines here in the U.S. They don’t decorate their planes in a funny manner but their flight crews often take a lighter approach to travel. I flew them on a previous trip this summer and experienced the following:

While experiencing tremendous turbulence while trying to land in Chicago in 40 mph winds the attendant comes over the PA and says “Having fun yet?”

On Southwest you don’t have assigned seats. While boarding another flight everyone wanted to sit up front. The male flight attendant with a German accent said “The back of the plane is also going to Greenville.” He also wanted everyone to get a window seat so that United would think they had a full plane.

This is hilarious! Having just flown back to Greenville and having had the experience of the plane getting struck by lightning mid-flight, I could use some aviation humor. 🙂

Hi Rob, me again from South-Africa.

Yip, I,ve flown many a time on their domestic routes and not only are their planes and advertising material humorous but the cabin crew as well.

All their anouncements on board, even the safety information, has a fun side to it. I think the passengers take more notice of the safety drill.

Thanks for featuring something positive about my country. 🙂
