Moon Pies

Moon Pie 100th Anniversary

With all the hoopla about some event or other occurring on Monday, August 21 of this week, the news of the 100th anniversary of the Moon Pie has been almost totally eclipsed! (HT: my dear wife Becka)

I don't remember ever having heard of, let alone eating (!), a Moon Pie until I came to college in South Carolina. Sorry, but my life was woefully provincial in NW Ohio in the late 1960's. I also learned here that the best way to enjoy a Moon Pie is with RC Cola. The following link about an annual RC-Moon Pie celebration was added in a comment. I thought it should be added at this point in the post since some readers don't look at the comments.

Here are links to several simulated eclipses of the sun with Moon Pies.

The solar eclipse has brought me out of my blogging hibernation. More than a couple people have whined commented to me recently about how much they missed my posts, so I'm going to get back at it. 🙂 At this point, I don't know how frequently I will post, but I will try to let the "IV's" drip through every week or so.

In the comments section of this post, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts about Moon Pies — how much you love them, your favorite way to eat them, or maybe not. To be totally honest, I have ways of getting carbs and fat grams that I much prefer. 😀

Feel free to add your thoughts about the much-hyped eclipse. Here in Greenville, don't try to get a hotel room or possibly even to drive on Monday. On campus alone there are over 8,000 people registered to attend all the special events related to the eclipse.

Never have liked Moon Pies although I have family members who absolutely LOVE them. The chocolate coating tastes fake and flakes off, the cookie tastes stale, and marshmallows never did anything for me–but then I don’t like S’mores either ?

I remember the last eclipse in Greenville — cool but this one is way over hyped in my opinion

I personally prefer Coke or Pepsi with my MP but the dorm vending machines had only RC so I learned to “like” them. The Moon Pie is a southern delicacy to be enjoyed slowly and methodically. Unlike an Oreo, it can not be twisted apart. So, I first break it in half and then eat out the marshmallow middle/chocolate, leaving the crispy “u” shaped chocolate edges to be enjoyed in all their delicious glory. At that point I have chocolate all over my face and fingers. And I might add, I never eat a Moon Pie in public!!! With regards to the eclipse, I wish I had called you earlier about coming down. It is suppose to be cloudy here tomorrow.

I’m like you – never had a Moon Pie or RC until I went to college in Greenville. Yum on those Moon Pies, but I didn’t like RC at all. Wagon Wheels are the go-to for a Moon Pie fix here in Australia. I can’t tell any difference, but those who care say Moon Pies are sweeter. But almost everything American is sweeter than things we get here.

I grew up in southern TX, where we considered ourselves Southerners, but I never heard of RC and Moon Pies together being a Southern thing until I went to college in SC. Honestly, I don’t particularly care for Moon Pies – as you said, I have many other ways I like my carbs and fats.

I’m glad you’re going to be posting again! Always enjoy seeing what you come up with.

My husband and son want to travel an hour or so to see the eclipse – my husband is even taking his telescopes. I am concerned about the traffic. I hope it turns out enjoyable and not frustrating.

That quote about introverts is spot-on!

Not a fan of Moon Pies or RC. Here in Asheville area, they are telling people to have food & water with them if they will be on the roads on Monday. Your t-shirt slogan fits me to a t.

Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, I had never heard of Moon Pies or RCCola. As a freshman at BJU, I quickly learned from my Georgian roommate what they were. Although highly touted by most of the Southerners I met, I never quite caught the fever.

Yeah! I’m so glad you’re posting again! I also never heard of Moon Pies until SC, having grown up in MI. Not my favorite either. I’m pretty sure I’ve never tasted RC Cola though. We’re driving 4 hours to see the eclipse along with 2 other families. Hooray for field trips!

So good to hear from you again! Having grown up in SC, I enjoy a good RC Cola from time to time, but have never cared for Moon Pies. (Of course neither is available here in the UK, so the next RC will have to wait!)

Pop a moon pie in the microwave and zap just a few seconds. The marshmallow puffs up and melts and it’s delicious! Gotta have an RC with it!

Love the moon pies. Never had one until BJU. They are a bit more plentiful now that we live in Texas. I’ll have to try the microwave tip, that sounds yummy. Oh, love the introvert comment at the bottom! Had to write that on the board above my desk. So true.

Never much cared for moon pies or RC Cola but my sons loved them. Very nice to see your blogs again.
