@Michael - Usually we men don't change our hair as drastically as women sometimes do ... or it used to be that way! In recent years, guys get perms, highlights, etc. Back when Cherrydale Point first opened, I got a coupon in the mail for a $2 haircut at Great Clips. I thought I'd give it a try. I told the young thing that I wanted the same haircut I currently had, just shorter all over. Well, from the first swipe with the clippers, I could feel that my look was going to be radically altered ... and it was! Fortunately it was in the summer, but it took the rest of the summer to grown it out so that I didn't look like a mushroom! I immediately renamed the place "Not-so-great Clips!" :-( BTW, the platinum highlights you see in my hair are all natural. You can't pay enough to achieve this look! :-D

@Heather - The change in your hair sounds like adequate reason for even your brother to have to figure out if he knew you. That's quite a bit of change for the male mind to take in! :-) I just *love* it (NOT!) when former students are back visiting on campus, they bear no resemblance to the person I knew as a student, and they almost insist that I dredge up a name when their appearance is no help. I usually just say, "I'm sorry, you're going to have to help me," (and finish the statement in my thoughts only, "as you should have immediately when you appeared here looking like someone I've never met and yet am supposed to remember!") :-)

@Deb - Sorry about the feed thing. For all the messing around with recovering twice from being hacked, I think I managed to keep up the normal rhythm of my posts. I'm glad you persisted!

Hi Rob ~ I'm just now reading your blog since way back around April 17th. Your feed on bloglines hasn't been updated since then, and I wondered why you weren't writing. I figured it all had to do with the hacking, etc. So tonight I came directly to your blog and found many posts I hadn't seen! I then updated to a different feed. Anyway, glad to see that you are back in business and that nothing is wrong.

After years of very long hair that I usually wore braided and pinned up, I finally got it chopped to shoulder-length, and shortly after I had it layered. My own brother almost didn't recognize me. :)

But what made me laugh is that, though a few people did notice my new look, *everyone* noticed the first time I wore pants to work instead of a skirt!

My experience has been that women's haircuts are typically more drastic than men's; therefore, it's more noticeable when a woman gets her haircut. I think overall women are more easily offended when a new haircut or new hairstyle is not noticed approvingly by others. Men don't seem to care so much. Again, men typically get haircuts not new hairstyles so it's not as big of a change for us.

The one time I did make a change in hairstyles I made the mistake of doing so over a weekend during the school year so that Monday I showed up to school with a drastically new look, I got lots of laughs and questions and funny looks from many students. I should have tried to do it over a vacation or something like that.

@Melissa - Some of us men don't think it's fair. We don't recognize some women sometimes, and it's because they look so radically different because of their hair - color or do. I guess women would classify that as part of their feminine mystique?

@Vikki - I think you may right on that one. Vive la différence!

Men and women are so different in their interactions with each other. Tell me if I'm wrong, but it seems like man-to-man complements are often disguised in sarcasm or joke. An example would be for a haircut, "I see you got your ears lowered."

Women's hair as "subject to change"?! Ha!! LOL! Love it! Sometimes the change isn't even on purpose!
