Potpourri

picture of potpourri

Do you like potpourri? To me, some varities are nice, but many are overpowering to the point of irritation. My French students always seem shocked to learn that the pourri part of the word comes from the French verb pourrir, which means "to rot." Since pourri is the past participle, potpourri is literally a "rotten pot." Unfortunately, some potpourri smells like it.

Today's iv is a collection of oddments that individually aren't enough for a whole blog post. What it amounts to is five different things I've come across that could have each been part of previous blog posts.

I had meant to include this in my most recent blog post on geek humor, but it wasn't in the right folder and was, hence, forgotten. I wonder if it's from the same source that two cartoons were from in my last post. It was sent to me without attribution. (see comments for attribution)

Dog Owner Look Alikes

picture of lookalikes

My last post highlighted some bizarre things from the newpaper. The picture on the right could have gone in that post, but it seemed like the perfect way to start off today's post. Which one is the dog and which one is the owner in that picture?! Have you ever noticed how much dogs and their owners resemble each other? It's as amazing as it is amusing.

One of my long-time readers asked about some pictures that used to be in my funny pictures archive, no longer necessary with the blog. I'll post them today so that they become part of the blog archives. I'll look through that folder to see what else I need to put on the blog soon. :-)

Here are six sets of pictures that do a better job than the newspaper article above did.

Foreign Delicacies or Indelicacies?

Every country has its delicacies. French cuisine, regarded by many as the best in the world, is probably best known for its pastries. In the image below most readers will recognize croissants on the left. The pastry on the right is called a religieuse, which means nun.

A religieuse is a made up of two glazed cream puffs, a smaller one atop a larger one. The most common fillings are chocolate pudding or coffee pudding. Some religieuses are good while others are just incredible!

British cuisine is not as highly regarded as French cuisine (is that the kindest understatement of the year?), but it still has its delicacies. In the picture below the dish on the left is steak and kidney pie, and on the right is fish and chips.

Japan is best known for its sushi.

Bizarre Finds

Do you ever wonder what inspires some of my blog posts? :-) Often it is family news or local and/or world events. Sometimes it's just something in life that strikes me funny and makes me think of something humorous on that topic.

As I run across pictures and stories that I think have the potential for inclusion in a blog post, I put them in a folder on my computer called "Sometime." I do the same with pictures that readers send me. Frequently when I look at what's in that folder, a theme for a blog post begins to form in my mind. This week as I scanned the pictures in that folder, I saw some great stuff that I thought would probably have nothing to do with any one particular blog post. So I decided to put some of the humorous or merely interesting pictures together into one post of wonderful, yet bizarre finds. Here goes.

A while back a reader took a picture of another vehicle and sent me it to me. You have to look really closely to see what some of those "animal pests" are. The one right above the phone number is "spouses."

Here are several newspaper articles I've received that struck me funny.

Appearances and Reality

picture of first impression

Are your first impressions usually right, or do you often have to try to get past those impressions once you learn more? It is the experience of many of us, I think, to form wrong first impressions when making new acquaintances or when viewing situations. I won't go into any details, but I recently made a misjudgment based on wrong first impressions when I witnessed some activities that were not part of my experience. Once I dug deeper, I understood not only why my first impressions were wrong, but also how far off they were from reality.

Today's iv is a compilation of things I've seen recently that involve first impressions — some of which are right and some of which are wrong. I'll lead off with a funny demotivational poster I saw on the topic.

I would say that first impressions are extremely important, but they're not the whole picture. Learning details sometimes shows you how off-base our snap judgments are.
