Planning Ahead

We're in the time of the school year where we teachers are doing lots of planning for the semester and, really, for the whole school year. Planning out a semester's worth of work is harder than it might seem, to those who have never taught. You keep evaluating and re-evaluating whether you can get it all done or if you have enough, if you've left out anything vital, and on and on it goes — particularly if you have a new course or a new textbook.

As I am currently working through the final details of my course syllabi, I thought it would be nice to take a look at some pictures of examples of poor planning or poor execution of good plans. This could also be titled "You had only one job!" but we'll consider mostly the planning aspect.

Did you know that they have schools to teach you to plan?! Even at a school where they teach architects to plan buildings, things don't always work out....

College of Architectural Planning

The plans for this drain were clearly too lofty.

Bad Drainage

Here's a different kind of drainage problem.

Breaking News or Broken News?

I thought you might get as big a laugh as I did at this "breaking news" matched up with the wrong picture.

Girl Scout Cookie Sales Campaign

I would say that they really did "break" the news this time!

No cookie customers were injured in the filming of this campaign.

Dietary Supplements?

Now that we're half way through January, are some of our New Year's resolutions falling by the wayside? For any of you who resolved to drop some weight, here are a couple of ideas to help you stick with your plan.

I've seen quite a few ads on TV early this year featuring Oprah who is encouraging people to try Weight Watchers. Here's something from Weight Watchers that I haven't seen in those ads:

Weight Watchers Knife Fork

Some diet plans tell us that we should eat only when seated at the table. Here's a new table that might help even with that idea:

New Diet Program

It seems as if you might cheat only once with that contraption.

I know I said I would probably not be posting, but these were just too good not to share. Some readers who didn't want to see me stop blogging suggested that I do the occasional, very short post. So there's one of who knows how many.

Until next time...

quotation...

"Back then (in the 1980s), when we had meaningless information, we just kept it to ourselves." — anonymous wise man/wise guy

There are no limits to what you can accomplish when you're supposed to be doing something else.

Pumpkin Spice What?!

I almost always have a funny picture on the screen when my students enter the classroom. Here's the picture I had on my computer on Monday this week.

Pumpkin Pi

Most got that it was pi, but missed that it was pumpkin pi. One of my students informed me that October 26 is National Pumpkin Day. I hadn't been planning to do a pumpkin theme for my daily pictures this week, but that bit of info flipped a switch for me. And so the rest of the week I'll have pumpkin-related pictures for my students and a pumpkin spice blog post for my readers. Here's the funny picture I put on the screen this Tuesday.

Human Spice Latte

With my current fatigue level after turning in my midterm grades this week, it's hard to imagine that this time last year I was still working part time at Starbucks, on top of teaching full time. In retrospect, I'm actually not quite sure how I did it. But I also know that next week marks one year since I turned in my two weeks' notice, knowing that I simply could not keep up the pace of teaching during the day and cranking out the pumpkin spice lattes (PSL's) evenings and weekends (along with grading and course prep). Anyway, on to the PSL humor.

Are You Glad Summer Vacation Is Over?

For students and teachers, summer vacation is a reality of life. Students generally can't wait until summer vacation arrives, and yet part way through the summer many are eager for school to start again, for a variety of reasons. Teachers have mixed feelings about summer vacation. It's a welcome relief from the rigors and long hours of the school year. Yet many teachers need to find summer employment, just to make ends meet. Teachers therefore often are very happy to return to the classroom, especially if their summer job is not particularly enjoyable. And parents? They also have mixed thoughts about summer vacation. I'll leave it at that.

Last week's post was some of my favorite memes I've seen lately. I saved some for this week since they are related to summer vacation, mainly from the teacher's point of view. I'm not really sure if these "e-cards" are technically memes, but they're close enough since they involve a picture of some kind and verbiage. The series below starts with the fatigue at the end of the school year and ends with one of the "fun" aspects of each new school year. I hope you enjoy them ... especially you teachers.
