Perspectives

Perspective is an interesting phenomenon. Two people can look at the same thing but not necessarily see the exactly the same thing, often because of their perspective. That was the case with the comments in my most recent blog post - the commentators added good insights from their own personal perspectives. The subtitle of my blog is "one French professor’s humorous and serious perspectives on life…." I often see humor where others see nothing but seriousness, and sometimes it's the other way around.

Today's blog post is 15 pictures that I've received since a post I did about two months ago called Can we believe what we see? You can tell that several of these were totally staged, but some are definitely interesting shots because of the angle or perspective, whether intentionally or serendipitously.

A young man keeping the Washington monument from falling...

A young lady eating the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem...

A player letting his basketball go to his head...

The rest I'll post without comment.

I always look forward to the comments on my blog because my readers are often able to add whole new insights since they're looking from a different angle. Many thanks to the many commentators! Some of your readers-only should enter into the discussions and add your perspective.

Signs of the Times

I love funny signs! It's kind of like with the thoughtless headlines in my most recent blog post - you have to wonder if the sign maker was really that obtuse or if there was method in the madness.

Here are a dozen signs I've run across since the last set I posted. They need no commentary, but several do cry out for an explanation (which I can't give)....

This morning we received a couple of "signs of the times" — signs that Christmas is getting near. Our daughter Megan's friend Kristen did a photo shoot to get some pictures for Meg and Jim's Christmas card. Here are two of the pictures of our grandson Drew:

I'm still working on that blog post on how to start your own blog. My research and writing for that one have taken me longer than I thought. If you are a blogger and have some insights to add, please send them right away - things you wish you had known when you first started blogging. If you don't know my e-mail address, use the contact link at the top of the blog.

I'm looking forward to your reactions to any of the signs posted today. If you run across any great signs, send them my way for a future post. If you like funny signs, you can see what I've already posted by clicking on "signs" in the tag cloud in the sidebar.

Thoughtless Headlines?

picture of headline

Have you ever laughed out loud reading the headlines in the newspaper? It certainly beats the weeping that some headlines cause! Our local writers have a special knack at coming up with punny headlines and even the occasional head-scratchers that leave you wondering if the wording was intentional.

I have collected some headlines in my files that I'm sharing today, followed by some scanned pictures of some bad headlines or opening sentences.

(Disclaimer: the humor of some of these is in how inappropriate their wording makes them sound.)

Can We Believe What We See?

How do you know whether to believe what you see? With today's technology it's possible to alter images so that the changes are almost imperceptible. In addition to that, some people have great fun posing to create certain illusions. And sometimes people and objects are aligned quite accidentally to produce amusing effects. I wish I could find and scan in a hilarious picture taken in our living room where one the people standing in front of our fireplace ended up with what looked like antlers when the pictures were developed.

Here are some pictures that have been accumulating in my files. Some are undoubtedly contrived, but I think that some are purely serendipitous.

In this final week before the elections, be careful. Reality is often distorted, and not everything may be as it appears. It's truly hard to know what and whom to believe. I'm glad to know One who is always to be trusted and believed!

If you have a funny picture similar to those above, please send it my way. I'll do another post in the future with the best ones I receive.

Are You a Motivator or a Demotivator?

A few weeks ago I did a post about motivation that generated some good discussion. People shared what has motivated them and what they've done to motivate others.

A number of people have told me how much enjoyed the posters in that blog post. Just recently I have learned about a tool at despair.com that allows you to upload a picture and give it a title and motivational text of your own. Here are some that I generated myself, using pictures I had in my files and their online utility:

picture of one of my posters

Here's one I made by combining a picture I found somewhere online with a t-shirt slogan that a reader added in a comment to a blog post of mine back in July:

Before I give the link to this online utility, though, I'd like to caution my readers to use it with great discretion. It would be extremely easy to be a source of huge discouragement to someone by thoughtlessly wedding image and text that could really hurt someone, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Words are very powerful things. The Bible tells us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue…. (Proverbs 18:21) Quite literally through our words we can cause others to want to live life to the fullest or even to want to die. That's a sobering concept for someone like me whose life is filled with the dispensing of words - in the classroom, in personal interactions, and on this blog.

With that said, I'll now give you the link – http://diy.despair.com/motivator.php

Here's a fun one that I did with a picture of Grandma and me with our grandson Drew:

picture of one of my posters

He turned 18 months old on Tuesday of this week, and we really do miss him a lot. We have a rendez-vous planned with Meg, Jim, and Drew in Cincinnati one weekend this fall, and we can't wait to see their whole family! Our daughter Nora will be flying up this weekend to spend the next week with them to help Megan celebrate her 30th birthday on September 17. If you'd like to send Megan birthday greetings and/or bits of wisdom as she reaches this milestone (millstone?), you may do it through the comments on this post.

Congratulations to a large number of my readers who correctly solved Einstein's puzzle! His assertion that only 2% of people could solve was made without knowing the caliber of readers of ivman's blague! You all have far exceeded his figures! Bravo!
