A Job Well Done?, take 2

Week before last my blog post called A Job Well Done featured pictures of some results of people's doing their work poorly. Today's post is more pictures of other results.

The first few are some products that demonstrate a lack of knowledge in either the designer or in those executing the designs.

The t-shirt maker was right, at least, in knowing that the name of the continent begins and ends with an "A."

Which Continent?!

This next one shows that someone needs to learn some basic English grammar.

A Job Well Done?

Well Done Fortune

Does it frustrate you when people don't do their jobs well? Doing a poor job seems to be the MO of many people these days, as in not putting the fortune inside the fortune cookie. The "inspiration" for this blog post is the confluence of several events recently. One is my having started to work as a barista at a local Starbucks this summer. I wanted to have a part-time job, and since I love people and coffee, Starbucks seemed like the perfect place to apply to work. I am enjoying the job very much, and there is surprisingly much to learn, and to remember! I really want to do my job well, for the sake of my customers and of the other partners in the café.

Here's a picture of me in my barista disguise.

Another event that helped trigger today's post was the experience that a former student of mine had this week. She is currently a student at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, for 9 months of culinary training. (Imagine my excitement to have a former student doing that!!!) Kerry is sharing her experiences on Facebook almost daily as they happen and then weekly in greater detail on her blog, Kerry Hands. Some of you may enjoy following her adventures.

One of Kerry's experiences recently was cooking beef, to French specifications. How done would you say the meat is in the following picture?

What is Irony?

Ironic Iron

A lot of people use the words irony and ironic when they actually mean sarcasm and sarcastic. Here's a short and possibly oversimplified explanation of the difference. Irony is what one experiences when the opposite of an expected situation or idea occurs. People don't need to go out of their way to experience an ironical situation or idea. Irony can occur naturally. Sarcasm can make use of irony to make an observation or remark about an idea, person or situation. Sarcasm is usually intended to express ridicule. Because of this, sarcasm tends to find more broad usage than irony. Ironically, irony has nothing to do with iron, as best as I can figure out.

That said, I must admit that I have a sarcastic bent that I have to keep in check. I love irony, though, and I love the humor of incongruities that don't belittle anyone. Today's post is a number of pictures of ironic situations, most of which seem to be unstaged.

House pets can be the source of much irony in our lives. Here are a couple for your dog lovers.

Yearbook Yourself

Do you ever look through old high school or college yearbooks and laugh at the hairstyles, glasss, or clothing? If you'd like to have a little fun with images, there's a website you need to explore — Jostens' Yearbook Yourself. You upload a picture of yourself, move it and resize it to fit in a little circle, choose male portrait or female portrait, and then select years across the bottom of the screen. You can see what you would have looked like in yearbooks every two years from 1950 to 2000. (WARNING: You may want to mute your computer since the site has loud, annoying music in the background.)

Here's what Becka would have looked like with the hairstyles and clothing of the various decades. (And yes, I am doing this with her blessing....) 🙂

Smile Makers

Life is quite busy and full at the moment, and so I'm thankful for some funny pictures that have recently come my way. I think today's "instant vacation" — a baker's dozen of funny pix — should bring a smile to just about any face.

Most of these pictures need little or no explanation since almost all of them contain captions.
