@b.j. – It sounds as if you grew up in an exciting home! Your brothers seem to welcome danger with open arms. As far as the pictures from India go, I’m not really sure which ones are, nor if the work conditions are by choice or by command. I do know that other countries do not place the premium on human life that we do. But I also know that people choose to do some very risky and frankly dumb things too.

YeeIKES! NO thank you! And to think my brother would love to be one of those skyscraper workers. Watching my brothers launch themselves off a cliff to grab a tree and shinny down it was enough to make my stomach turn. Another brother was logging some tree fall, and one of the tree’s root wads was heavier than he expected. He was cutting the top of the tree, and the weight of the root wad caused a twenty foot long tree trunk to spring itself back standing up in the air! Thankfully, my brother was not standing on that part of the trunk at the time. He must have learned his lesson from standing on the wrong side of a limb once. Really, it’s a wonder I have any brothers left at all, with all the things they do…;

It is actually sad to see some of these pictures, such as in India, where the caste system deems these men’s lives to be expendable, and thus cheaper than paying for safe working conditions.

@Janel – YIKES! I’m trying to picture that in my mind! Maybe the post should be called “Why Tall Women Live the Longest…”?

@Jenny – I had even more of those old NYC pictures, but I three was about all I could handle and that was enough to get the point across. I’m not a real fan of heights either and don’t do well on ladders – even step ladders – yet among my favorite things to do is to hike to the top of Looking Glass Rock in NC and go to the top of tall things in Paris (Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Sacré Coeur, just to enjoy the view. I know, it makes no sense! And Looking Glass Rock happens much more frequently than Paris….

Those pictures of the men overtop of NYC are enough to make my stomach turn upside down and inside out. I’m not keen on heights when there’s a very good fence between me and the precipice.

I love to do home improvement projects but am only 5′3″. Changing the lightbulbs in my garage with the 15′ ceilings turned out to be fun when all I had was a 5′ stepladder. I was determined to get this job done, so I took 2 sawhorses, placed a piece of plywood on top of those, then put my step ladder on top of that and I was still standing on the top “this is not a step” step to get the job done. So….I guess I can identify with some of these pics!
